Michelle Segal
Michelle Segal is a Tempe, Arizona-based artist and founder of Little Black Dog Press. Her artist's books have been exhibited in Arizona and are held in public collections, including the Baldwin Library of Historical Children's Literature at the University of Florida and the Burton Barr Central Library Artist Made Book Collection in Phoenix.
Artist statement
Artist's books give me the freedom to tell stories in ways that traditional books cannot. Every story begins with an idea, a place, or an experience. From there, I develop a structure that allows the story to unfold through the act of opening, exploring, and discovering.
Each story determines its own structure. My role is to find the form that allows that story to be experienced rather than simply read.
Education
Arizona State University / Pyracantha Press with John Risseeuw and Dan Mayer. Additional studies include courses at Laguna Gloria Art School in Austin, Scottsdale Artists' School, and community college art programs in Massachusetts, Virginia, and Arizona.

Little Black Dog Press
The press name comes from Michelle Segal's little black schnauzer, who followed her everywhere. The name keeps the press personal, memorable, and rooted in the studio practice behind the books.
