The Kid

Little Black Dog Press

The Kid is an artist-made book inspired by the Aramaic song Had Gadya. The Kid is an allegory for the Jewish people and their survival over the centuries. The Ten Commandments given to the Jewish people to help ensure their survival is represented by the 2 tablets that form the central image of the book and the 5 blue squares on each tablet representing the commandments. The book form embraces English and Aramaic in telling the story, with the cover and pages unfolding left and right in alternating text with images. In addition, pages of progressively larger sizes create the final image that represents the underlying message of the story. Printed letterpress from handset Lydian type with polymer plates of FrankRuehl type and linoleum cuts were used to create the book. Illustrations by Joan Thomson. “The Kid” was designed, printed and bound at the press by Michelle Segal.
